Snow Skiing Checklist - 7 Things You Should Carry On the Ski Slopes

If you are planning a skiing vacation or maybe you are already at the resort and are preparing for a day of skiing then there is a lot to think about. This is especially so if you are new to winter sports. You need to get your skis, boots and poles. You need to organize your lift pass and then you need to hook up with your ski class. Without these things your day would be unsuccessful, however there are a few other things that people often overlook that can also impact on your day. Here is a checklist of 7 things you may need on the ski slopes.

First thing to take is a trail map. No doubt you have looked at the trail maps that are dotted throughout the resort or even at your pocket version but it is essential that you take it with you when you are skiing. Despite your studies you will need to refer to it at least a few times on the first day. Maybe less as the week goes by but it is always handy to have especially if you take a turn that you are not used to.

Lip balm and sunscreen. The lips are very sensitive to the sun and wind. They are one of the few parts of your body that will be exposed to the elements. Make sure they are protected as chapped lips can spoil your vacation. Take a small tube of sunscreen and top up every few hours or so. This is mainly around the face and ears but this depends on the weather and what you are wearing. If it a pleasant day you may decide to ski in a shirt and will need to protect the shoulders and arms.

Something to clean your goggles or sunglasses. Sunglasses often come with a bag that doubles as a cleaner so this is fairly easy to cater for unless you have lost the bag a long time ago like me. If you don't have the bag then any cloth, like a chamois, will do the trick. Obviously you need to be able to see where you are skiing so clear vision is essential. I'd suggest goggles or glasses are essential too as the glare from the snow is too much even on an overcast day. Goggles are best but sunglasses are more comfortable in my opinion (depending on the type of skiing you are doing).

Carry some water and a snack. There are many cafes and rest stops dotted around the slopes and you won't have to look far to get a drink at the bottom of the slope but a bottle of water is handy if you need a break during a run. It also means you don't have to stop skiing for too long. As for a snack, I like a chocolate bar and skiing is my excuse to indulge my chocoholic tendencies. Other people may take an energy bar or even a sandwich.

A cell phone is a good device to have on you if you have an accident or need to keep in touch with friends. You need to find out where to meet up for lunch at the very least ! Take your wallet with some form of id and a credit card or small amount of money. You don't want a heavy wallet weighing you down.

Rain, Snow and Hail - Our Ever Changing Weather

In meteorology, the condensation and separation of the atmospheric water vapour as rain, snow, hail, fog, is called precipitation. We distinguish falling precipitation such as rain or snow, deposited precipitation, such as dew or fog, and accumulated precipitation in the form of hail or snow.

When large clouds rise, they soon reach altitudes where temperatures are below freezing. These clouds are made up of ice crystals, water vapour, and droplets of water which, in spite of the below-freezing temperature have not yet crystallised into ice. Tiny small crystals coalesce into snowflakes, which fall to the ground. Snowflakes fall in the form of dry snow to the warm ground. If the snowflakes have to pass through a warmer layer of air, they melt and change into rain.

Drops of water, which in our geographical latitudes fall to the earth, were in reality originally snowflakes. The droplets or ice crystals forming in the clouds are too light to fall to the ground. Only when millions of these droplets collide and coalesce into one drop, they are heavy enough to form precipitation.

Some flat clouds create only smaller drops of water, which fall to the ground as drizzle. When drizzle falls on frozen ground, it immediately solidifies as ice. The ground is then covered by a thin layer of ice. This poses a great danger for drivers, because the colourless and transparent ice is not visible on the dark surface of the road.

In the clouds that do not reach the altitude with freezing temperatures, air currents whirl millions of tiny droplets and join them together. These drops of water then fall to the ground as rain. An opposite electrical charge accelerates this coalescence.

Snowflakes show a characteristic symmetry reflecting the coalescence of water molecules in ice. However, snowflakes deviate from this basic formula. The reason is, that the tips of crystals grow at different rate of speed. There are never two identical snowflakes. Individual ice crystals are so fine that when they fall, they touch and deform. These crystals reach the ground as deformed compounds. Tiny droplets of water and some ice crystals form in the higher layers of clouds. Moisture from the evaporating droplets combines with the ice, forming larger ice crystals. These later form snowflakes. Snowflakes fall as dry snow on cold ground, or as wet snow on warm ground.

The nucleus of a grain of hail is either an ice crystal or a grain covered by a thin layer of ice. Many additional ice layers must form before the nucleus becomes a grain. Strong rising currents cause the nuclei to be in constant swirling motion, which allows the cool water droplets to adhere. The number of ice layers (up to 25) indicates, how many times the nucleus was swirled around in the cloud. The thickest ice layer forms during the descent, because the air humidity is higher in the lower layers of the air. When the air current cannot support the grain of hail any longer, it falls to the ground. Hail may cause considerable damage.

Fog is a surface cloud layer. Tiny droplets of water are suspended in the air. This considerably decreases visibility and poses danger not only to air travel, but sea and road travel as well. Fog may even freeze (icy fog). If it combines with exhaust gases and dust particles, it may become a toxic smog.

Similarly to fog, dew and frost are included in the deposited precipitation. When the earth's surface cools down below the dew point, dew forms at temperatures over the freezing point, while frost will form at temperature below the freezing point. The dew point is the temperature at which the air is saturated with water vapour.

At one hundred percent air humidity, the dew point corresponds to the temperature of the moment. Dew is the transition stage from water vapour to water, while frost represents the transition stage of water vapour to ice. Dew and frost represent approximately 3 percent of the total amount of liquid precipitation.

In regions with low amounts of precipitation (rain), dew may be the source of moisture for the scarce local vegetation, since the precipitation amounts differ greatly from one region of the earth to another. How To Prevent Frostbite In Children And Keep Them Warm, When Taking A Winter Skiing Holiday

Dressing your children in preparation for the cold Winter sports can be great fun, but it is often bitterly cold in the mid winter, and it can be a living hell for a poorly equipped youngster. Your children's clothing must protect them from the cold.

You could opt for a trouser and jacket combination, the quickest and most practical solution for young needs. Go for some salopettes, which do not let the cold in, but still allow a layer to be easily removed or replaced if you take a break somewhere a little warmer.

With the all-in-one ski suit it is more difficult to respond to temperature changes and toilet stops, but it is very comfortable for the child and is completely waterproof. Beware of cotton underneath the jacket or all-in-one. It traps their sweat when they exert themselves (going up or down steps for example). If this humidity is not retained by the tee-shirt it will reach the jumper (second cotton layer), with a risk of freezing in low temperatures.

Choose "breathable" garments, which let the perspiration through. A Patagonia thermal vest (just one recommended brand, but there are several similar ones at various prices) plus a fleece top is a good defence against the cold. Similarly, go for a breathable membrane for the ski jacket too, so that the humidity will not be trapped by any of the clothing. This is the 3 layer system: an undergarment, an intermediate layer and finally a jacket or ski suit. If one of these layers does not allow the perspiration to escape there will be condensation. As protection from the cold goes it is by far the best solution, but can be expensive. These garments are rather costly, and because our children grow out of them quickly we are reluctant to make such investments. For each child-sized breathable under garment sold, fifty adult ones are sold. If buying two technical undergarments and two intermediate layers seems too expensive, just buy one of each and be prepared to wash them frequently.

Don't forget that a ski jacket can also be worn to school or at the weekends. As far as socks are concerned, multiple layers restrict the circulation, making the feet cold. Adding extra layers therefore produces the opposite effect to that intended. A good pair of ski socks (warm, but not too thick) is good enough, or if the instructor agrees, a thin pair of socks over some tights. Rather than gloves, get them some mittens. Although they allow less freedom for movement, they are 8 times easier to put on, due to the number of awkward fingers that have to be positioned in a glove. They are also warmer than gloves, because the fingers are together and keep themselves warm. If the weather is exceptionally cold you can also add a thin pair of gloves inside the mittens, thermal longjohns, and consider a fleece balaclava under the helmet.

The physical risks of cold

True frostbite is quite rare in the typical winter sport situation. Very low temperatures and prolonged immobilisation are required to produce this serious condition. Nevertheless, it can sometimes occur in Val d'lsere, a resort renowned for being 'cold' in December.

The cold can manifest itself in many ways while skiing. If boots are tight, and feet are moist, there is a risk of frostbite. If the extremities are white, it is imperative that they are re-warmed immediately, at around 38°C {never in hot water). In addition, the skin frequently becomes chapped in children. This is due to the skin drying out and is actually made worse by moisture. If the chin comes into contact with the zip or the top of the ski jacket it can cause red patches. Apply some thick cream to nourish the skin.

A last piece of advice: make sure they have a good breakfast, and put a snack in their pocket.

In the centre of the North Island of New Zealand you will find three volcanoes that rise up out of the centre of the island plateau. Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand is the southern most of these three volcanos. Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand has three ski areas. The two main areas Whakapapa on the north-western side and Turoa on the southern side of the volcano join together for marketing purposes as 'Ruapehu'. These fields are found in New Zealand's Tongariro National Park.

Whakapapa is New Zealand's largest and busiest ski area. On Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand you will find unpredictable and rapidly-changing weather conditions. The field has an array of bluffs and drop offs which can be tricky in the white out conditions experienced at times on the mountain. Higher parts of the mountain have easier areas to ski on than lower level parts of the mountain.

Turoa on the south western side of the mountain shares the same lift pass as Whakapapa and has Australasia's biggest vertical drop (720m) when all parts of the field are open. Turoa can be an extremely cold place to ski. I have done most of my New Zealand skiing in the South Island and could not believe how cold it was skiing at Turoa when I went there. We had to stop at one of the chair stations going down the field to warm up going down.

There is no easy skiable access between the two fields.

Advanced riders can find enough to keep busy in the two terrain parks or off piste on the Cote 2000 chairlift.

The base of the field is 850m (2788ft) and the top is 2350m (7780ft). The season is usually a short one. Mègeve is a serious contender for the most stylish resort in the French Alps...

It isn’t quite as breathable as some of the other new fabrics but the super duper waterproof system is very functional.

Gore-Tex is also introducing the PacLite this season which is the most lightweight outer shell yet still remains fully waterproof and breathable. It’s easy to stuff in your pack if you don’t need it and handy to get at.

There is plenty of other hi tech outer shells by companies such as Epic and L.L. Bean to name just a couple. These new shells are windproof, water repellent and very breathable. These shells are light as a feather and perfect if you don’t need complete waterproof ability.

Sometimes the definitions of hard shell and soft shell can get a little fuzzy. Some manufacturers are now producing stretchable shells that are waterproof and breathable. This makes these shells very versatile.

These fabrics are sold under a lot of different labels and names but all have a construction that consists of three layers which adjusts to the climate between you and the jacket. So the more you sweat the more the fabric breathes while remaining waterproof. These are great outwear garments if you’ll be exposed to a wide range of temperatures throughout the day. And the price isn’t too bad all things considered.

Fleece makes up the inner layer of your outerwear. Fleece as we knew it has been replaced with high performance fleece called überfleece which incorporates water and wind resistance offering superior protection from storms, strong winds, and snow. Perfect for the ski hills.
The windproof fleece is the warmest of all the fleece and it’s very trendy. These are cozy and versatile but they are probably best with a waterproof shell if you plan to be playing in the snowbanks.

The wind resistant fleece is very popular because it’s good for work and good for play. It’s much warmer than traditional fleece and if you add a wind and waterproof shell you’ll be cozy all day long!

If you buy the right outerwear for the winter ski season you’ll be warm, dry, and comfortable from morning to night wearing lightweight outerwear. You don’t mind spending the money if you know the outerwear will function like you want. And this new hi tech outerwear is far superior to anything we’ve seen in the past.

Austrian Alps - Ischgl

Ischgl and the neighbouring Galtur are in the Austrian Tirol within a mountain range known as 'The Silvrettas'. There is one ski pass linking the villages of Ischgl, Galtur and the village of Samnaun on the Swiss side of the mountain. People often ski/snowboard over to Samnaun to buy duty-free product and then return back to the Austrian side of the mountains. Ischgl is the first of the resorts that you see as you come into the Paznaun valley. It is the biggest of the resorts in the region. There is a great traditional Austrian feeling about the whole valley. The town of Ischgl is positioned on a small hill in a deep valley and you can walk from one end to the other via a network of elevators and short-cut tunnels.

The base of the field is at 1400 metres and the top is at 2872 metres giving a vertical rise of 1472 metres. The longest run is 9 km. The field has 48km of cross country trails and 80km of testing off-piste trails. Ischgl is recommended for intermediate level and upwards. The nearby resort of Galtur offers better facilities for the beginner skier. The resort has other attractions as well including a seven-kilometre toboggan run, a bowling alley, paragliding amenities, an indoor swimming pool, historical monuments, zoological gardens and a national park.

The Rennstrecke Funpark at Idjoch on Ischgl is claimed to be the largest dedicated snowboard park in Europe. Rennstrecke has 5 jumps ranging from beginner to professional; 4 straight jumps ranging from advanced to professional; 3 high jumps ranging from advanced to professional; 1 fun box for the advanced; 1 quarter-pipe; 1 world cup half-pipe 'The Tube'; 4 rails ranging from beginner to professional; 2 wave rides ranging from advanced to professional; a Boardercross including snakes, waves and jumps; 1 children's cross including snakes, waves and a jump; 1 giant slalom including timekeeping. The field also hosts a ski giant slalom and a high speed course.

To summarise Ischgl it has the biggest terrain park in Europe, reliable snow, beautiful scenery, a large ski area and lively après-ski - sounds great to me!

Axamer Lizum is located in Austria. It offers the best range of skiing and boarding within immediate reach of Innsbruck. Axamer are one of the top snowboarding resorts in Austria, with riders sometimes outnumbering the skiers. The resort has a world known terrain park and a half-pipe. The base of the ski area is at 874m (2867ft) and the top is 2343m (7687ft). The snow cover is generally reliable. The longest run is 6.5km. There is a skiable area of 41 hectares.

Axamer Lizum is less than two hours flight time from the United Kingdom plus a transfer from Innsbruck. The ski resort is good for expert skiers, intermediate skiers, beginners and a fun park and boardercross are available for snowboarding. The resort gives you direct access to 40km of downhill skiing and is served by ten ski lifts and is one of the smaller Austrian ski resorts.

Axamer Lizum was the site of the women's downhill run in the two Innsbruck Olympics in 1964 and 1976.

Snow is atmospheric vapour frozen in crystalline form. Snow occurs when the temperature of the atmosphere at cloud level is below freezing; it falls either as individual ice crystals (always with six sides) or as snowflakes composed of several crystals joined together. No two snowflakes are alike.

Most snowflakes are less than one-half inch across. The largest snowflake recorded was fifteen inches in diameter. Scientists think that there are six main snow crystal shapes - plate, stellar, column, needle, spatial dendrite, capped column - and each snowflake is made up of two of more of these snowflake building blocks.

Some snowflakes are wet and sticky while others are light, dry, and fluffy. It is never too cold to snow. Vail is seen as the showcase of American skiing/snowboarding. It shares a lift pass with Beaver creek, Aropahoe Basin, Breckenridge and Keystone. The field is not recommended for the budget conscious snowboarder.

The Golden Peak terrain park, known as Fly Zone, at Vail has a super-pipe that is 450ft long with 18ft walls. There are another two pipes, 24 tabletops and 30 rails plus 12 unique hand-carved rails. Aspen is a favourite Colorado ski resort. It is world-renowned for its downhill skiing. Aspen Mountain rises imposingly from the township and is one of four ski areas surrounding Aspen. Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk all lie within 12 miles of Aspen town.

These mountains are cut by beautiful alpine valleys. The Maroon Creek, Castle Creek and Hunter Creek Valleys are all easily accessible from Aspen township. Mègeve is a large linked ski area with a resort atmosphere, fancy restaurants and designer hotels. You will find a sophisticated nightlife there. Megeve is generally not a destination for the younger crowd due to the cost. This is a furs resort!

The field is best for beginners, families, intermediate cruisers, ski-to-lunchers, non-skiers, cross country skiers and night owls. Mègeve is large with smooth and well-groomed slopes.

There are two snow parks: One on Mont Joux and the other is on the Combloux section. The better of the two parks is on Mont Joux, which has a manmade pipe and an on-duty pro lending shovels to the kids constantly modifying and doctoring the jumps. Advanced riders can find enough to keep busy in the two terrain parks or off piste on the Cote 2000 chairlift.

Powder snow skiing is not fun. Its life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality.

It is the activity of gliding over snow using skis strapped to the feet with ski bindings. Originally used primarily for transportation, skiing evolved into a popular recreational and competitive activity during the 20th century.

Apparent it may seem at a glance while seeing someone extreme skiing in the white landscape swiftly, but the real fact is that, you ought to be mentally tough and firm to keep your nervousness in check.

In the most difficult terrains with steeps, glades, and moguls you have to be superb in understanding the mind-and-body-connection: motivation, visualisation and focus.

Southern Vermont is the home of the superb Mount Snow, closest major ski area in the northeast to nearby metropolitan areas. Winter sport fans from the New York metropolitan area and the mid-Atlantic area, drive north to escape for alpine skiing, with a variety of novice and intermediate cruising trails on the main face or Carinthia, or for more challenging expert skiing, try the North Face. Located Featuring 26 lifts and more than 135 trails, the top elevation at Mount Snow is 3600 feet, with a vertical drop of 1700 feet. There are 20 chair lifts and six surface lifts available.

The Mount Snow Ski Club is an active member of two competition communities, the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) and the United States of America Snowboard Association (USASA). They promote recreational and competitive winter sports, hosting major ski races for over 40 years. Their recent achievements have been "Snowboard Junior World Champions," "US Champion", and the "2002 Olympic Gold", in addition to the "Freestyle Skiing Junior National Mogul Champion" and the "National Upright-Combined Champion". Their Alpine Training Center at Mount Snow offers training to all young children interested in on-snow training and competitive skills.

To add to the skiing activities, snowboarders are welcome at Mount Snow, with a "kids only" terrain park as well as a special tubing park. The Grand Summit Hotel and Crown Club sits right off the slopes, and guests enjoy a heated outdoor pool and ski in/ski out accommodations. Different winter ski vacation packages are available with many great deals designed to save the families money. Child care is available at Mount Snow, and the youngsters will be well cared for, learning to ski as well. Mount Snow is very family oriented. They have a unique 'back-to-base' trail system used, that keeps everyone in the family from getting lost. Kids under six can ski and ride for free. When an adult buys a 3 to 5 day ticket during mid-week, their child receives a free ticket for that same time period as well. During January, the "Kids Ski & Learn Free" weeks seem to be the most popular family deals. Both group and private lessons are available for both adults and children.

For those sore muscles and tired bodies after a day on the slopes, Mount Snow features a full service health spa that you should take full advantage of. A variety of massages are offered, as well as various skin treatments. Spa packages are also available, and the spa caters to couples as well, with wedding parties welcome. There is also a fully-equipped health club and fitness class offered.

The total packages of winter activities at Mount Snow includes snowmobiling, snowshoeing, tubing, cross country skiing, and sleigh rides. There is a ski shop on the premises and rental equipment is available for those who do not have any. There are several restaurants and bars on the mountain to choose from as well. If you love to ski then you’ll probably be in the market for some new winter outerwear. You’ll want to look good and keep warm. Outerwear for the winter ski season can cost a pretty penny so before you rush out to buy that new outwear why not get caught up on the newest technology in fabrics.

I promise not to bore you with a bunch of textile news. But there have been some big changes in the fabrics that are being used and the layering techniques that have become so popular to keep you warm.
The hard shell is the weatherproof outer layer that you’ll want for skiing and any other winter activities. The hard shell system will have the weatherproof shell combined with an insulator and a base layer. This will give you the total package for lightweight, breathable, warm outwear good for a wide range of temperatures.

The hard shell is the outer layer which protects you from the weather conditions such as rain, wind, and snow. Shell fabrics have become very hi tech and thus there’s a solution for everyone.

Gore-Tex has the new Tex XCR which is 25% more breathable than other Gore-Tex but it still remains waterproof. It’s the perfect choice for someone that skis all day no matter what the weather conditions but you are going to pay top dollar for it.

Triplepoint Ceramic uses dry yarn technology which means the yarn used is waterproofed before it is woven into the outer garment then its again waterproofed as a finished product. This jacked is very light and gives you double the protection and it’s a good price. It isn’t quite as breathable as some of the other new fabrics but the super duper waterproof system is very functional.

Gore-Tex is also introducing the PacLite this season which is the most lightweight outer shell yet still remains fully waterproof and breathable. It’s easy to stuff in your pack if you don’t need it and handy to get at.

There is plenty of other hi tech outer shells by companies such as Epic and L.L. Bean to name just a couple. These new shells are windproof, water repellent and very breathable. These shells are light as a feather and perfect if you don’t need complete waterproof ability.

Sometimes the definitions of hard shell and soft shell can get a little fuzzy. Some manufacturers are now producing stretchable shells that are waterproof and breathable. This makes these shells very versatile.
These fabrics are sold under a lot of different labels and names but all have a construction that consists of three layers which adjusts to the climate between you and the jacket. So the more you sweat the more the fabric breathes while remaining waterproof. These are great outwear garments if you’ll be exposed to a wide range of temperatures throughout the day. And the price isn’t too bad all things considered.
Fleece makes up the inner layer of your outerwear. Fleece as we knew it has been replaced with high performance fleece called überfleece which incorporates water and wind resistance offering superior protection from storms, strong winds, and snow. Perfect for the ski hills.

The windproof fleece is the warmest of all the fleece and it’s very trendy. These are cozy and versatile but they are probably best with a waterproof shell if you plan to be playing in the snowbanks.

The wind resistant fleece is very popular because it’s good for work and good for play. It’s much warmer than traditional fleece and if you add a wind and waterproof shell you’ll be cozy all day long!

If you buy the right outerwear for the winter ski season you’ll be warm, dry, and comfortable from morning to night wearing lightweight outerwear. You don’t mind spending the money if you know the outerwear will function like you want. And this new hi tech outerwear is far superior to anything we’ve seen in the past.

Queenstown rocked and glittered last night as the 2007 Winter Festival finally produced a perfect night of stars, fireworks and music.
Suddenly the town was filled with people for the Mardi Gras.
Traffic slowed again on Frankton Rd but this time it was because of pleasure and party time and not the crippling snowstorm of last week.
Fireworks blazed into a clear night with the mountain peaks etched into a navy blue frosty sky.
Small babies screamed with each whoosh and big kids and adults gasped with delight.
The festival had finally begun.
Celebrity MC Jason Gunn yelled: "Hey Queenstown, here we are, are we warm enough, are we happy?" The crowd of more than 3000 called "more, more, more".
People laughed, hugged and kissed in the streets. Go the 2007 festival.
It's blastoff at last.
Earlier the wacky Day on the Bay finally went ahead and although it was enjoyed by a slightly smaller crowd with just two female contestants in the Undy 500, it featured all the traditional splashes, dashes and mad bravery.
The birdman judges said they looked for humour, costume and the all-important pre-flight routine and crowd reaction.
Props ranged from a flying contraption, jetboat and bikini to an aircraft and an umbrella. While some dived in to an icy Lake Wakatipu, other crashes were not so graceful.
Aviation jokes resounded as an Air New Zealand aircraft "took off" along the runway. But the bottom fell out of the industry as "pilots" Kieron Hunter and Shane Bellamy tipped the craft into the water.
Hoping to take out the winning title for the second year running, Hush Spa contestant Claire Prior wore a perky outfit that had the Top Bloke contestants' eyes fixed.

PyeongChang is rapidly rising as the likely candidate for the 2014 bid. Partly it's because Pyeong Chang is well financed with no doping scandal(Salzburg) and with no risk of terrorism or bad infrastructure(Sochi). Korea ( http://korea.ixs.net ) proved it's mettle in the winter games and is the favorite to win. PyeongChang is already prequalified, given it's strong performance in 2010 Winter Olympics selection process, where it lost by the narrowest of margins. The trainers, staff and athletes from 31 countries were impressed by the facilities during the 2007 PyeongChang InterSki Congress. Another factor that helps Pyeong Chang's case is that this would be the first ever Winter Olympics in continental Asia, and would promote diversity and opportunity in the Winter Olympics. In a continent housing half the world's population, Asia has lagged behind in Winter Olympic participation. Korea's nomination should raise the interest in winter sports in this under represented continent. The factor that stacks the cards in PyeongChang's favor is the possibility of North and South Korea competing jointly if PyeongChang gets the nomination. This "Peace and Harmony" games would be great emotional importance to the Koreans, and may very well bring about regional peace.

Salzburg:
Salzburg was the favorite, given it's past status as a venue for winter Olympics as well as due to the dynamic personality of Radmann who headed the bid committee. It was thought that Salzburg's "Olympic Tradition" alone will allow it to win nomination. However, a few factors have since changed the dynamics. First of all, Salzburg just doesn't have the financial muscle to compete with its well financed rivals. This is a very important consideration, given the facilities that are expected by the athletes as well as guests in 2014. The doping scandal surrounding Austria's team also had a very negative effect on it's bid. Mr. Dick Pound, who is the chairman of World Anti-Doping Agency(and just as importantly a senior member of IOC) seems to have a dim view of Austrian bid after the scandal was made public. Ironically, the very fact that Salzburg has hosted Olympics twice goes against it. The competitors are in geographical zones that have not hosted them before perhaps can argue for diversity and opportunity for others. Finally, Mr. Radmann who was very connected with the IOC has recently resigned. This is considered a set back for the Olympic bid of Salzburg.

Sochi:
Sochi, an underdog in the beginning of the race made it to the short list, thanks to the public relationing of President Putin. To Sochi's credit, it is very well financed, given Russia's wish to display it's newly found oil wealth. However, there are reasons why it was an underdog to begin with, and no amount of spin will make these reasons go away. Sochi is wracked by power failures. There were 2 black outs two weeks before IOC's review of the city. These were dismissed by their officials as "happens every year". As if this improves matters! There is a lack of modern infrastructure in the Krasnador region. It may have been a fancy resort in Soviet times(by Soviet standards), but it just doesn't compare to the standards expected in the 21 st century. Sochi just does not have the track record PyeongChang has, of hosting international meets year after year since 1997. The Sochi region is an ecological basket case already due to over exploitation. Making Sochi ready for Winter Olympics will entail tearing down national forest and exacerbating the situation. Sochi's bid is being actively slammed by environmental groups—a fact not lost on the IOC. Furthermore, Sochi is uncomfortably close to Georgia, Abkhazia and Chechnya. The last thing the IOC will want is proximity to terrorist trouble. The IOC will have to assess risks of an area 7 years in the future, when today the security situation is dicey. While it's true that things can become better, but it can be argued that the situation can very well become worse.

Powder snow skiing is not fun. Its life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality.

Apparent it may seem at a glance while seeing someone extreme skiing in the white landscape swiftly, but the real fact is that, you ought to be mentally tough and firm to keep your nervousness in check.

In the most difficult terrains with steeps, glades, and moguls you have to be superb in understanding the mind-and-body-connection: motivation, visualisation and focus.
There can be hard pack, crud, ice, or powder. At this level you need to be able to make quick adjustments to your speed, turn radius and balance your direction.

The pre-requisites are: Strength, endurance, psychologically sound mind-set, metal toughness and well focused. To attain all these qualities, it is advisable to have intense ski performance training.

There are so many snowboard instructor courses and gap year snowboard courses where expert ski instructors give accurate training.
Just have the pleasure in attaining those skills through ski performance training.
